About Us

Opportunities

Become part of the Seattle MESA community! Take a look at our pages to read more about opportunities for teachers, students, volunteers, and parents. You can help on anything from a one-time, daylong program to year-long programs both in-school and in the local community. We welcome anyone interested in supporting underrepresented students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

Seattle MESA Offers:

Individual Academic Plans: These help Seattle MESA personnel monitor individual student progress.

Study skills training: Students learn the most effective techniques for academic achievement.

Career and college exploration: Guest speakers and field trips show students different college and career options.

Parent leadership development: Parents learn how to become effective advocates for their children’s academic success.

Teacher training opportunities: Annual institutes are offered for MESA pre-college teachers to learn hands-on curriculum and new techniques for teaching math and science.

Saturday Academies: One Saturday per month from October through May, Saturday Academy gives students a chance to learn from the UW faculty, who also design the curriculum. The topic this year is Marine

Biology.

In-Class Model: Students enroll in a MESA math and/or science class at their school. Within the classroom the MESA teacher incorporates hands-on math and science projects to supplement the regular class curriculum.

Summer Math Scholars: Offered to incoming high school freshman, Summer Math Scholars is a 3-week summer math camp which prepares students for high school mathematics.

Tutoring: Students in the MESA program are offered tutoring by trained UW student volunteers.

Scholarships: Last year, we awarded over $12,000 in scholarships to college-bound seniors in the MESA program.

Afterschool/Club: With the help of the MESA Teacher and MESA Staff, students complete STEM related activities and college prep.

MESA Day: A celebration of students’ innovation, hard work, and interest in STEM fields. MESA Day provides a fun and exciting opportunity for middle and high school students to design and engineer projects, compete against their peers, and learn by doing.

We are always looking for new ways to motivate and support our teachers and students, so if you have an idea for a program or partnership that doesn’t exist, contact us! Thank you for your interest!
