SULAYMAN DEHLAWI

Hometown: Burien, WA

Grade: 3rd year Masters

Major: Electrical Engineering

What school do you serve? Ingraham High School

How long have you been with MESA? This is my 2nd quarter tutoring with MESA.

Why did you join MESA? My grandmother told me that I might make a good teacher, so I decided to try it out and get some tutoring experience. I saw a flyer from Seattle MESA looking for tutors, and I immediately joined.

What do you like most about tutoring for MESA? It’s very rewarding when I’m working with a student to figure out a certain concept or their homework, and he/she understands it after my explanations. I love that “Eureka!” moment.

What are the challenges that you’ve faced when tutoring? In the past, I’ve worked with students who seem like they don’t really want to be there, or they don’t put as much effort as expected. It’s frustrating because on one hand, I do want to help them but on the other hand, there are other students who genuinely need my help.

Fun fact(s) about yourself: I accidentally swam with a Minke whale once near a beach in the Puget Sound area (but I didn’t know it was a whale at that time). I’m half-Indian but no one believes me. I’ve scuba dived in the Red Sea before.

Hobbies and Interests: I like to write fiction and to play video games (Pokemon’s my favorite).

If you could be one pizza ingredient, what would you be and why? Cheese. Because everyone loves cheese and stuffed crusts!
